OU to honor graduates at commencement ceremonies on Dec. 15

Commencement for August and December degree candidates will take place on Saturday, Dec. 15, in the Oakland Athletic O’rena. The ceremony schedule is as follows:  


9 a.m. – School of Business Administration
School of Education and Human Services
School of Health Sciences
School of Nursing

1 p.m. - All masters and doctoral graduates

5 p.m. - College of Arts and Sciences
School of Engineering and Computer Science
Bachelor of Integrative Studies

The speaker for the 9 a.m. ceremony will be Dr. Moon J. Pak. Dr. Pak is a clinical professor of Health Sciences, Oakland University Chairman, U.S.-DPRK Medical Science Exchange Committee Senior Vice-President, and a member of the Korean American National Coordinating Council.

There is no speaker listed at the present time for the 1 p.m. ceremony.

Speakers for the 5 p.m. ceremony will be instructor Dr. Phyllis A. White and student Robert Conner. Dr. White is an award-winning faculty member from the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance where she teaches courses ranging from “Creative Composition” to “What’s on Your Playlist?” Dr. White is also a longtime member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP). Conner is the 2012 recipient of the College of Arts and Sciences Meritorious Achievement Award.

Vocal Performance major Nicolette Book will perform the national anthem at all three ceremonies.

Web users can view the live commencement stream online on the OU homepage. The camera will be active only during commencement exercises.

Doors to the O’rena will be open for guests half an hour before each ceremony. All guests must have tickets and should be seated 15 minutes prior to the processional. Each ceremony lasts approximately 1-1/2 to 2 hours. Graduates are asked to stay for the entire ceremony and will be directed by a marshal to process out of the O’rena.

Those planning to attend graduation should follow the 2012 Fall Commencement Parking Information Map. Parking is free and open to the public, except where indicated. In case of inclement weather, information will be available by calling (248) 370-2000 or by tuning in to WWJ or WJR radio stations or Fox2, WDIV-TV or WXYZ-TV.

Each ceremony will be interpreted in sign language. Guests with other special needs should call the Office of the Provost at (248) 370-2190.
