Lt. Governor John Cherry to speak at Earth Day Expo

Looking for the place to celebrate Earth Day? Join hundreds of others interested in learning about healthy and earth-friendly living at the second annual Earth Day Expo at Oakland University, presented by OU and the Upland Hills Ecological Awareness Center. The Healthy People–Healthy Planet Earth Day Expo will be held Saturday, April 21 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in and around the Oakland Center.

The event celebrates health and wellness, sustainable living and an environmentally conscious lifestyle. Admission is free and open to the public.

Michigan Lieutenant Governor John Cherry Jr. will deliver the event’s featured address at
4 p.m. Cherry has been recognized as one of “Michigan’s Most Effective Legislators” by The Detroit News and the 2005 Conservationist of the Year by the Michigan United Conservation Clubs.

Other scheduled events include a 100th birthday tribute to legendary labor leader and human rights activist Walter Reuther, who delivered a speech in honor of the first Earth Day in 1970 at Oakland University and provided early support and UAW funding for the Earth Day movement. He appears in Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century.

In addition to myriad informational presentations by educators and policymakers, State Representative Marie Donigan will speak about “Clean Air, Clean Water and Transportation.” A film festival will screen “An Inconvenient Truth,” “Who Killed the Electric Car?” and “The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil.” Musical entertainment, food, kids’ activities and free samples will also be offered throughout the day.
