U.S. Rep. to speak at GEAR UP student assembly

A special assembly will be held on June 1 to present the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) students at Jefferson/Whittier Middle School with 21st-century Scholars Certificates signed by U.S. Department of Education Secretary Riley and President Clinton.

Dale E. Kildee, U.S. Representative from the 9th Congressional District that includes Pontiac, will be the keynote speaker at the event. He has strongly supported the congressional funding for GEAR UP and is represented on the Jefferson/Whittier GEAR UP Advisory Council.

GEAR UP is a $3 million, five-year project funded by the U.S. Department of Education and a partnership that includes Oakland University, the School District of the City of Pontiac on behalf of Jefferson/Whittier Middle School, Oakland Community College, the State of Michigan and the Pontiac Collaborative.

These certificates encourage GEAR UP students to work hard, to take challenging courses and to plan for post-secondary educational programs.

GEAR UP is a project that is offering Jefferson/Whittier students and their families a coordinated set of programs and services on a consistent basis that is supported by the school district and significant segments of the community.

Oakland University is a comprehensive state-supported institution of higher education located in Oakland County, Michigan. The university has 109 bachelor's degree programs and 63 graduate degree and certificate programs. Dedicated to preparing learners for the 21st-century workplace and society, Oakland University is organized into the College of Arts and Sciences and the Schools of Business Administration, Education and Human Services, Engineering and Computer Science, Health Sciences, Nursing and the Honors College.
