Oakland University

2015 Year in Review

Greetings from President George W. Hynd

2015 has been a year to remember for Oakland University. We have set the stage for unlimited success in student engagement, scholarly research, and community partnerships that truly make a difference.

This has been a year filled with stories of both individual achievement and collaboration.

Behind the scenes series
A summer series went behind the scenes of Oakland University, exploring nooks and crannies of campus that even some of the most dedicated Golden Grizzlies have never seen — or maybe have never even heard of.
Fall photo contest
Students entered their best #ThisIsOU fall photos and a studio art class chose the winners. Pictured is the winning photo by environmental science and sustainability freshman Ryan P. Cass (Meadow Brook Hall) and the runner up photo by secondary education major David Zucchi.
OUWB Charter Class Milestones
On the brink of finishing four years of rigorous medical education, 47 students from Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine’s charter class participated in the school’s first Match Day, finding where they will complete their residency.
Enhancing Autism studies and services
OU's Center for Autism opened an applied behavior analysis clinic dedicated to treatment and research related to autism spectrum disorders (ASD), but will also benefit the greater community. Additionally, the State of Michigan awarded OU a $380,000 grant to further research and support.
Two new carillon series
The Elliott Tower continues to ingrain itself in OU campus life with two new series: the summer carillon concerts featured international carillonneurs and the Halloween Spooktacular. The Elliott Tower is also recognized in the Keep Michigan Beautiful contest.
New academic programs
New programs this year underline OU’s effort to help students prepare for in demand fields in a shorter amount of time, such as a fast-track to the BSN and a Bachelor of Science to Master of Public Administration program. New programs were also added in Forensic Nursing, Business Analytics and information security management, and LGBTQ Studies.
'Best' b-school ranking
The Princeton Review ranks OU among the nation’s best business schools in the new 2016 edition of its annual book, “The Best 295 Business Schools” and on its website.
Wayne Law partnership
A new agreement with Wayne State University Law School will put students on the fast track to earning a bachelor’s and law degree, completing both one year quicker.
Got spirit?
A group of OU’s most spirit-filled alumni is giving back – or rather, paying it forward – to its alma mater in the form of a new scholarship. Eight recent alums jointly created and funded the Golden Grizzly Spirit Award to recognize an OU student with exceptional school spirit. The first award will be given out in winter 2016.
On stage with the Stones
Oakland University’s choral ensemble performs “You can’t always get what you want” on stage with the Rolling Stones during their Zip Code tour. Watch the video.
Keeper of the Dream
In its 23rd year, Oakland University’s Keeper of the Dream Awards Celebration recognizes student leaders who promote diversity, cultural understanding and community activism. The 2015 Keeper of the Dream event welcomed actress and AIDS activist Jurnee Smollett-Bel.
Oak View Hall earns LEED certification
Oak View Hall’s unique architecture and design has captured LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, Gold certification status. Oak View Hall is OU’s newest student housing complex, home to 500 students.
Paying their way
A crowdfunding campaign sends 34 OU Brass Band members to England to compete in a prestigious brass band festival. They were the second American band to ever perform at the competition, and first ever university brass band, and won second place in the first section.
Collection highlighted in national project
As 2015 marks the 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, pieces of a collection held in the University Archives’ Special Collections went on display as part of an online exhibit by Ford’s Theatre.
Your cat knows, he might not care
Two researchers in OU's psychology department have found that cats behave differently when their owners are smiling as opposed to frowning. Their study received a lot of attention on social media, including this article on National Geographic.
Night at Comerica Park
An annual alumni tradition, alumni gathered at Comerica Park to cheer on the Detroit Tigers and enjoy camaraderie with fellow alums and their families. This year, everyone in the park knew it was OU night as President George Hynd threw out the first pitch.

Fawns are left alone immediately after birth and their mother will often return to them after dark to avoid attracting predators. Please stay a safe distance from the fawns so they don't get scared.
