Student newspaper wins Detroit SPJ awards for cover design, op-ed

Oakland University's independent student newspaper, The Oakland Post, won several awards at the Detroit Society of Professional Journalists awards banquet on Wednesday, April 16 at the San Marino Club in Troy, Mich.

Competing in Class C "non-daily papers" against the region's professional publications, Photo Editor Salwan Georges, Managing Editor Kaylee Kean and Editor-in-Chief Oona Goodin-Smith took home third place in cover design for the Post's Nov. 5 issue, "A Librarian Loved and Lost."

The staff also took third in editorial writing for a June 11 op-ed.

Goodin-Smith was awarded the first place SPJ Larry Laurain scholarship and Kean, who will take over as editor-in-chief for the 2015-2016 school year, received fourth.

Garry Gilbert, the director of the journalism program at OU, also won the first place "explanatory story" award for his piece in HOUR Detroit about OU development officer Luke Fleer 'Trauma and Triumph'.
