Speakers sought for Oakland University’s 2015 TEDx Conference

Oakland University's 2015 TEDx Conference will bring together leading scholars in a variety of fields.
In the spirit of spreading ideas, spurring dialogue and sharing knowledge, Oakland University is preparing to host its second annual TEDx Conference. This year’s theme, “Aspire to Rise,” echoes the philosophy of OU founder Matilda Dodge Wilson, who envisioned the university to be a place of intellectual engagement.

TEDxOaklandUniversity 2015 organizer Laura Dinsmoor points out that the theme comes from a quote by Andrew Carnegie, 'Here there will be erected ladders upon which the aspiring can rise.'

“Matilda Wilson Dodge quoted these words at Oakland University’s groundbreaking when she donated the land needed to found our institution,” said Dinsmoor, special instructor and associate director for outreach in OU's School of Engineering and Computer Science. “Since this time, Oakland has continued to provide an environment for academic curiosity and research to thrive. Speakers from any discipline that aspire to share their life’s work and ideas will find Oakland University's TEDx the ideal place to do this.”

Event organizers are inviting leading thinkers, makers and artists to share their ideas that create real change in the state of Michigan and around the world.

Applications are being accepted for speakers and labs. Those received by Monday, April 27 will be given first consideration.

Oakland University is partnering with Oakland County for this year’s conference.

“Technology, entertainment and design are among the fastest growing sectors of the knowledge-based economy,” said Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson. “Partnering with Oakland University to host a TEDx event demonstrates our commitment to being one of the top high-tech regions of the country.”

Launched in 1984, TED stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design and has hosted conferences with experts around the world. TEDx events are independently organized to promote intellectual exchange on a community level.

TEDxOaklandUniversity 2015 will take place on Friday, Oct. 23 on the campus of Oakland University. For more information, visit tedxoaklanduniversity.com or email tedxoaklandu@gmail.com. To learn more about becoming a TEDxOaklandUniversity partner, contact Laura Dinsmoor at dinsmoor@oakland.edu.
