Honors College hosts lunchtime discussion on autism

Oakland University faculty and administrators gathered in the Honors College for a lunchtime discussion, “Understanding Autism and Asperger’s.” The talk was led by Drs. Janet E. Graetz and Chaturi Edrisinha, both of whom teach in OU’s Department of Human Development and Child Studies.

Dr. Edrisinha noted that the number of children identified as having autism spectrum disorder is on the rise. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that one out of 68 children has been identified with autism. In 2000, the number was one out of 166 children.

Among the topics discussed were symptoms of autism, changes in diagnostic criteria, research trends and outreach programs, including many resources offered through Oakland University’s Center for Autism.

“We need others to know that by doing these programs, it really does change lives.” Dr. Graetz said.
