Creating authentic data experiences for students in the STEM
fields can be a challenge. Doug Baltz, an OU Adjunct Lecturer in TDES and AP
Physics Instructor from Birmingham Public Schools, has found a way that is
gaining successful momentum. Baltz has teamed up with Amy Butler, Executive
Director of OU INC, to create a conduit between student’s research interests
with OU professors and professionals in Southeastern, MI.
The STEM research and design course provides a background in
research methodologies, engineering design, and real world data analysis for
students. Students are required to have 3 “externships” in a professional
setting that explores STEM design and career pathways. In addition, students
learn engineering skills by designing and analyzing processes and process units
in order to assess product quality, measurement issues, economics, safety, and
environmental/sustainability impact.
Baltz was recently the recipient of the PASCO STEM Educator
of the year award. This national award is sponsored by the National Science
Teachers’ Association, and is an incredible honor for Baltz. The competition featured
the very best STEM educators from the entire country and Baltz was named the
best of the best.
