Automation Alley: Preparing the Workforce for Emerging Technologies

Since its founding in 1999, Automation Alley has been on a mission to grow the economy of Southeast Michigan by enhancing the businesses that call it home. One way the business accelerator is doing just that is through its Technology Center at OU INC.

Headed up by Automation Alley Technology Center Director Alex Violassi, the space gives companies access to affordable training and resources in a variety of emerging technologies, providing innovative solutions to a number of industry challenges.

One industry challenge at the heart of Automation Alley’s current Technology Center offerings is product lifecycle management, or PLM. PLM is the process of managing the lifecycle of a product from its conception and design, through manufacture, to service and disposal. It integrates people, data, processes and the latest digital tools. PLM technologies can optimize a company’s productivity by making complex processes more cohesive, streamlined and simplified. In doing so, a quality product can be brought to market faster and at a less expensive price point, creating less waste and generating higher profits.

To help small and medium-sized business with PLM know-how, Automation Alley has partnered with solidThinking, DASI Solutions, Fisher/Unitech, Geometric Solutions, Michigan Economic Development Corporation, Oakland University, Siemens, Tata Technologies and Wenzel America to offer affordable training that covers both fundamental and advanced topics in PLM technologies and methodologies. Using state-of-the-art software and equipment — including digital factory simulation, 3-D scanning and 3-D printing — Automation Alley is equipping the current workforce with skills critical to the future of manufacturing.

Current class offerings include AutoCAD Essentials, CATIA – V5 FoundationsInventor Essentials and NX – New User. Next up is CATIA – V5 Foundations, to be held Feb. 23-27 at the Technology Center.
