David Kelley, one of the preeminent contributors to the design field, has joined the list of Honorary Esteemed Fellows in Oakland’s Honors College. Kelley is the founder and chair of IDEO, a pioneering design firm that developed the first mouse for Apple, the first Treo, and the “thumbs up/thumbs down” button on the Tivo remote control. He is the most recent Honorary Esteemed Fellow in Oakland’s Honors College, joining Sir Andrew Motion, former poet laureate of the United Kingdom, and Nobel Prize winner Jodie Williams.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to welcome David Kelley as an Honorary Esteemed Fellow of the Honors College,” said Graeme Harper, dean of the Honors College. “He is one of the renowned design thinkers in the world. His ingenuity, his passion for creativity and his incredible successes in innovation are matched by his passion for education.”

Kelley is the Donald W. Whittier Professor at Stanford University, where he has taught for more than 25 years. His commitment to innovation in design and education has earned him many awards, including the Sir Misha Black Medal, Edison Achievement Award, Chrysler Design Award and National Design Award in Product Design from the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineers.

Kelley has shared his passion for engineering, design and other topics in nationwide speaking engagements and in articles for U.S. News & World Report, TIME Magazine, BusinessWeek, among other publications.
