Regina Carter pairs with Oakland Jazz Quartet for Jimi Hendrix tribute
An alumna and renowned jazz violinist, OU's artist-in-residence Regina Carter will play alongside Oakland University faculty for an evening of Jimi Hendrix music on Saturday, Jan. 17.
Renowned jazz violinist Regina Carter will share the stage with the Oakland Jazz Quartet for a musical tribute to legendary rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix. The event will held at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17 at the Carr Center in Detroit.
Carter, a Grammy nominee and 2006 recipient of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, is an OU alumna and Detroit native. As an artist-in-residence at the university, Carter returns each year to teach master classes and to perform. She has played several concerts with the Oakland Jazz Quartet, including a 2013 performance that featured music from popular movies.
Comprised of OU faculty members Miles Brown (bass), Sean Dobbins (drums), Scott Gwinnell (piano) and Mark Stone (percussion), the Oakland Jazz Quartet is a highly regarded ensemble whose members have performed locally, nationally and abroad. They will perform several Hendrix songs with Carter, including “Fire,” “Manic Depression,” “Angel” and more. The Jazz-off Band will also make an appearance.
“I deeply value Regina’s creative input,” Brown said. “To my knowledge, there have not been many jazz projects that have tried to translate Hendrix’s music.”
Tickets for the event are $20 for general admission and $10 for students. They can be purchased in advance with no service fees at startickets.com, by phone at (800) 585-3737, or at the door.
Along with Oakland University, this event is supported through the Jazz Network Foundation, the Carr Center and the Knight Foundation. For more information, contact OU’s Department of Music Theatre and Dance at (248) 370-2030 or visit oakland.edu/mtd.
