John Young promoted to VP of Communications & Marketing

John O. Young's expanding role at Oakland University is effective January 1, 2015.
Oakland University President George W. Hynd has named John O. Young vice president of communications and marketing, effective January 1, 2015. Young will report directly to the president in his new role.

"Our communications and marketing efforts must coordinate across the university's many activities and vigorously support the efforts of our students, faculty and staff," Hynd said of Young's expanded role. "Simply put, we must emphasize quality communication and superb marketing in everything that we do. I believe that John's direct reporting line to me will prove vital to our success."

The move is one of the strategic changes in Oakland University's development and implementation of a new strategic plan that will help shape the future of OU.

"It's an exciting time at Oakland U. and I look forward to helping the faculty and staff continue to support our students' success, increase our support of scholarly excellence and continue to tell our story through visibility while enhancing our academic reputation," Young said.

A resident of Midland, Young joined Oakland in January 2013 as associate vice president of communications and marketing.

Prior to joining Oakland, Young held leadership positions at Northwood University and Walsh College.

Young also has significant health care marketing experience, serving in a variety of leadership roles at Oakwood Healthcare System, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, the Detroit Medical Center and McLaren General Hospital.

Young serves on the Auburn Hills Downtown Development Authority, the Arnold Center Board and recently completed a four-year term on the Midland Planning Commission.

His wife, Melinda, is an Oakland University alumna.

The move is one of the strategic changes in Oakland University's development and implementation of a new strategic plan that will help shape the future of OU.
