The Oakland Symphony Orchestra (OSO) will present its first concert of the season at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5 in Varner Recital Hall. As the University’s resident orchestra, the OSO offers the finest symphonic repertoire and gives the music program’s exceptional student musicians the opportunity to rehearse and perform alongside professional musicians, including many OU faculty members.
All are invited to attend this exciting program, which will feature guest soloist and Detroit Symphony Orchestra member Sharon Sparrow, who will perform the “Renaissance Concerto for Flute and Orchestra,” by Lukas Foss. Professor Sparrow currently serves as DSO artist affiliate faculty at Oakland University, and is internationally acclaimed for her artistry as a solo, chamber and orchestral performer. Other works for the program include “Carnival Overture, op. 92,” by Antonín Dvořák; and “Symphonie fantastique, op. 14,” by Hector Berlioz. The OSO is conducted by Dr. Gregory Cunningham.
Varner Recital Hall is located on the Oakland University campus. Maps of the campus are available at oakland.edu/map or by searching for "Varner Hall" on a smart phone. Ample free parking will be available.
