The start of each academic year can be both exciting and challenging. This year, we look forward to enjoying the advantages of our newly completed student housing complex, Engineering Center, 1,200-space parking structure and other improvements.
To ensure that everyone's first weeks on campus progress as smoothly as possible, please familiarize yourself with the following information.
REOPENING OF MEADOW BROOK ROAD
Emergency repairs to a section of Meadow Brook Road between Hamlin Circle and George T. Matthews Apartments are complete and the road has been reopened.
AREA ROAD CONSTRUCTION
University Drive from I-75 to Squirrel Road will be limited to one lane of traffic in each direction through the first three weeks of the new semester. This may cause significant traffic congestion during rush hours.
Commuters headed east from I-75 are advised to turn right on Cross Creek Parkway, then turn right on Squirrel Road, use the first turnaround lane to head back north on Squirrel Road, and then enter campus at the new Library Drive extension.
Motorists leaving campus are strongly encouraged to avoid the main entrance by taking West Oakland Drive to Walton Blvd. or the Library Drive extension to Squirrel Road.

Other area construction projects to keep in mind involve
closure of Avon Road between Crooks and Adams Road, which will continue through September, and
Tienken Road from Livernois to the Paint Creek Trail through Saturday, Nov 15.
A NEW ROUNDABOUT ON CAMPUS
A new roundabout is located at the intersection of Library and Pioneer drives. Traffic will flow counter clockwise and all vehicles will enter the circle by turning right. Cars in the circle have the right of way, meaning vehicles approaching the intersection must yield.
Oakland University police officers will monitor and guide traffic in the roundabout during the first part of the new year to ensure safety and efficient traffic flow.
OVERNIGHT PARKING CHANGES
A number of changes have been made to designated overnight parking lots on campus. Overnight parking, which will be designated by fluorescent green striping, can now be found in:
- the Ann V. Nicholson Student Apartments parking lot;
- the George T. Matthews Apartments parking lot;
- the P5 and P11 parking lots;
- portions of the P1, P3, and P16 parking lots, and;
- all covered spaces in the P29 and P32 parking structures.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
- No overnight parking will be permitted on the top levels of the P29 and P32 parking structures
- Parking spaces on the covered levels of the P29 and P32 parking structures will not be designated by fluorescent green striping, but are nonetheless available for overnight use.
Please note that the Oakland University Police Department will strictly enforce overnight and all other parking and traffic ordinances.
CAMPUS COMMUTING TIPS FOR 2014-15
The best way for campus commuters to minimize delays and frustration is to stay informed. University staff and students will assist campus community members with parking and traffic questions in three strategically located information tents during the first week of the fall 2014 term.
Additionally, the following tips may be useful:
As always, the university encourages commuters to leave early to get to class or work on time, to carpool when possible, to walk or bicycle rather than drive when moving around on campus, and to avoid combing high-demand parking lots for open spaces.
