Re: IOM Report on GME

As An Update:

On Tuesday, July 29, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) will release its report on the governance and financing of graduate medical education. As part of its coordinated, strategic response to the report, the AAMC will release a press statement with initial comments about the report’s recommendations. In the coming days, the AAMC will prepare a more detailed analysis and response to the IOM that will be shared with our members as well as distributed on Capitol Hill. Our Government Relations and Communications teams are also developing background materials about GME and academic medicine that will be available on the AAMC website when the press release is posted on July 29. 

In addition, the AAMC will host a members-only webinar about the IOM report on August 5 from 4 to 5 PM (Eastern). Registration information for the webinar will be circulated to AAMC members in the next few days. Lines for the webinar will be limited; a recording will be available for those not able to participate.

Also, in case you missed it, the New York Times published an editorial on Sunday (July 20) that endorsed the need for more federally funded residency slots to provide clinical training for medical school graduates to help alleviate the nationwide doctor shortage.
