May 2014 Newsletter: Client Company Spotlight: Microcide, Inc

Microcide Inc, client company of the Macomb-OU INCubator, has recently made great strides in the commercialization of their PRO-SAN and SILKY SOFT sanitizing products. Recent highlights include a trade mission to Panama and Costa Rica, a contract with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and recent data that will potentially put many soaps off the market, thereby making room for SILKY SOFT to shine.

Microcide’s U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)-arranged U.S. Export Association-oriented trade mission to Panama and Costa Rica resulted in overwhelmingly positive responses from retail stores and chains, importers, distributors and food processors. Costa Rica is widely known as an environmentally-conscious green country, whereas Panama is a commercial capital with a vibrant economy of six to eight percent gross domestic product (GDP) per anum. Both these attributes bode well for Microcide and their antimicrobial products.

Microcide’s contract with NASA for the Mars Space Mission will play a significant role in food safety for the astronauts. While the mission is in the distant future, it is currently under preparation through various engineering, biological rocketry and telecommunication efforts. For example, NASA is building tabletop greenhouses to grow fresh vegetables for the astronauts during the long space flight. Microcide will provide safe, nontoxic, sanitizing PRO-SAN wipes for disinfecting the fresh produce.

The composition of the Microcide disinfecting wipes has been cleared by the NASA’s payload and toxicology scientists and the microbicidal efficacy has been evaluated and approved by the microbial safety group in the Life Sciences Laboratory. The product is currently being passed over to the Kennedy Space Center where another group involved in the greenhouse project will be testing the PRO-SAN disinfecting product for disinfecting other objects.

Recent data that suggests that long-term exposure to certain active ingredients used in antibacterial products, such as Triclosan in liquid soaps, could pose health risks, such as bacterial resistance or hormonal effects. Millions of Americans use antibacterial hand soap, as consumers generally view these products as effective tools to help prevent the spread of germs, though there is currently no evidence that they are any more effective than plain soap and water.

The US Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency are closely collaborating on science and regulatory issues related to Triclosan to ensure government-wide consistency in the regulation of the chemical. Governor Mark Dayton of Minnesota recently signed a bill legalizing a measure banning Triclosan-containing products in the state, a law that will go into effect January 1, 2017.

Microcide is steps ahead, having patented SILKY SOFT. This safe food-grade sanitizing and disinfecting composition, approved by the USDA as a W3 disinfecting product, does not contain Triclosan. Instead, the futuristic product composition is environmentally safe, nontoxic and does not breed resistant bugs. SILKY SOFT can be used for anything, from baby diaper rash and bedsores to surgical disinfecting scrub and household hand disinfectant.

Microcide Inc. is a Michigan-based technology company, dedicated to the research, development and commercialization of antimicrobial products for households, personal care, health care and food industries. These patented no-rinse surface-sanitizing products are non-toxic, environmentally friendly, EPA and USDA approved, and effective against antibiotic-resistant microorganisms. In addition, they can replace presently available carcinogens generating chlorinated, toxic and/or free radical-producing oxidizing agents, as well as cholinesterase-inhibiting quaternary ammonium-based products.

Microcide products include non-alcoholic mouthwash, mouthwash for kids, fruit and vegetable sanitizers, and sanitizing Triclosan-free liquid hand, and sydnet bar, soaps. Microcide has research collaboration on USDA and NASA projects at Ohio State and Iowa State Universities, was nominated for the Presidential GREEN Chemistry Award by the EPA in 2005, and both the US NAVY and NASA have selected Microcide sanitizing products.
