Distinguished Professor Emeritus Economics receives lifetime achievement award in human rights

The Michigan Coalition for Human Rights (MCHR) is awarding Dr. Karl Gregory, Oakland University Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Economics, with the Bishop H. Coleman McGehee, Jr., Lifetime Achievement Award at its annual dinner May 18.

This year marks MCHR’s 34th year of activism for human rights, respect and dignity. Racial justice, economic justice, women’s rights, immigrant rights, LGBTQ equality, a humane and peaceful U.S. foreign policy—-MCHR has stood in the forefront of these battles for decades. The struggles continue, and so does MCHR’s leadership.

The MCHR is recognizing Dr. Gregory as a lifelong activist for racial equality, civil and human rights. Dr. Gregory has advised Michigan governors and served in the federal government under several Presidents. Dr. Gregory was a member of the board of directors of the Detroit branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and the First Independence National Bank of Detroit. He also advised the U.S. Census Bureau on the African-American population for the 1980 and 2010 censuses.

In addition to service on the MCHR Advisory Board, Dr. Gregory’s community role has included serving on the boards of directors of the Detroit Chapter of the Urban League, the Inner City Business Improvement Forum, and the United Way for Southeastern Michigan.

A recipient of Oakland University’s MLK Community Service award in 2008, Dr. Gregory was recognized for being instrumental in promoting social responsibility and equality throughout numerous urban centers. He has served as chairman of the Washington, D.C., Congress of Racial Equality, as U.N. senior economic adviser in China and held various other positions and appointments with the federal government under Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, Ford, Carter and Reagan.

Dr. Gregory holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Michigan, and recently retired from his position as Professor of Economics at Oakland University in 1996 after which he continued his involvement by serving on school’s Economics Advisory Board.

“Karl served on the Economics Board for many years, and we appreciate his contribution to Economics, the business school and the university,” says Anandi Sahu, chair, Department of Economics, Oakland University business school. "I am indeed delighted to know that he is being honored with a lifetime achievement award by the Michigan Coalition for Human Rights. Karl richly deserves the honor."
