More than 350 students from 50-plus Oakland County high schools, their principals and area educational leaders will gather at Oakland University on Wednesday, April 30 to explore the complex issues of inclusion and achievement gaps in Oakland County.

Organized by the Learning and Achievement Coalition-Oakland, the fifth annual Student Leadership Conference will take students outside their comfort zones as they develop action plans to expand dialogue between students of different backgrounds and create opportunities for those otherwise left behind.

Centered on the theme of “Owning Your Success,” the event will feature a keynote presentation by award-winning playwright, actor, producer and comedian Trey Anthony.  Known for her ground-breaking television and theatrical production “da Kink in my Hair,” Anthony has been referred to as the Oprah of the Canadian theatre scene. Her critically-acclaimed play was named one of the top ten plays in Canada’s theatrical history and she is also the first black Canadian woman to write and produce a television show on a major prime time Canadian network.

The conference also includes breakout sessions on a wide range of topics, including diversity, leadership, college preparation, self-empowerment, mentorship and service. The sessions will be facilitated by students and leaders from OU, Oakland County and surrounding communities. Organizers say the conference will provide an enlightening experience for attendees.

“With 14 different breakout sessions, the high school participants will leave the conference with proven strategies that will enable them to implement real change in their school environment,” said Reginald McCloud, director of OU’s Department of Pre-College Programs. “In addition, we are also excited to have OU’s past Student Congress president and vice president speak to the students about leadership from a student perspective.”

Comprised of representatives from the 28 Oakland County school districts, Oakland Schools and Oakland University, The Learning Achievement Coalition-Oakland sponsors the Student Leadership Conference as part of a mission to close the gaps that separate people of various racial and socio-economic groups.

Registration will start at 7:30 a.m. in Wilson Hall on OU’s campus and the event will conclude at 2 p.m. Lunch will be provided. For directions, view the campus map. For more information on the 2014 Student Leadership Conference, contact OU’s Department of Pre-College Programs at (248) 370-4455.
