Four Oakland University student veterans were presented with $3,500 awards from the Delphi Foundation at an April 14 campus event. Jeremy McCoy, Jeffrey Schuett, Glen Neville and Justin Hoffman earned the awards in recognition of outstanding academic performance, leadership and involvement both on OU’s campus and in the surrounding community.

“Our veterans offer rich experiences to the campus community,” said Glenn McIntosh, interim vice president for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. “Many college students study abroad. Our veterans have lived and served abroad. They help set the tone for a living and learning environment that is very special.”

McCoy, a junior social work major and U.S. Marine Corp. corporal, currently serves as lead recovery mentor at Abaris Great Lakes Counseling. He has interned with the Salvation Army and also worked at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit. He plans to pursue a Master of Social Work in preparation for a career working with veteran populations.

Schuett is a sophomore majoring in political science. He joined the U.S. Navy after high school and his career has included tours in Afghanistan, East Africa, Southeast Asia, Central America, South America and the Persian Gulf. While at OU, he has worked in the Veterans Support Services Office and served as vice president of Student Veterans of Oakland University. He plans to attend law school and eventually run for public office.

A senior graphic design major, Neville served in the U.S. Army and was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service. He has served in dozens of countries and his family includes two adopted children from Ukraine. Specializing in anti-terrorism, he served his last tour in Afghanistan where he helped build schools and establish centers for medical treatment.  He plans to start a graphic design business that will employ disabled veterans.

Hoffman is a senior double majoring in sociology and criminal justice. He has helped raise more than $300,000 for PurpleStride Detroit to heighten awareness of pancreatic cancer and also supported the Detroit Tigers Foundation. The 29-year-old has 12 years of service in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves. As a member of an infantry regiment, he served a tour of Iraq in 2004 and is currently a senior drill sergeant in the Army Reserves.

For the past five years, Oakland University has been recognized as a “Military Friendly School” by G.I. Jobs magazine, a distinction reserved for the top 15 percent of all colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide.
