Gerard Madlambayan is awarded grant from the National Cancer Institute

Assistant Professor Gerard Madlambayan, of the Department of Biological Sciences, was recently awarded a grant (R15CA182889) from the National Cancer Institute (one of the National Institutes of Health) for studying how Endothelial Cell Activation Regulates AML [acute myeloid leukemia] Growth and Relapse. The three-year project started February 4, and the first year of the grant receives funding of $429,874. Clinical analysis of patients with leukemia has shown increased endothelial cell activity suggesting a role of these cells in the pathogenesis of the disease. This proposal will elucidate how the inflammatory response of endothelial cell activation participates in leukemia progression and relapse. The long-term goals are to use findings to develop novel treatment strategies that aim to treat leukemia while preventing relapse.
