Oakland University set to host 2014 MASAL Conference

Scholars from across the United States and Canada will convene at Oakland University for the 2014 Michigan Academy of Science, Arts and Letters Conference on Friday, Feb. 28.

The annual conference will feature presentations on more than 30 disciplines in the sciences, humanities and social sciences. Abstracts of all papers will be published in the academy's academic journal, the Michigan Academician.

Dr. Fritz Nelson is the keynote speaker of this year's event.

This year's conference is headlined by keynote speaker Dr. Frederick E. "Fritz" Nelson, professor emeritus at the University of Delaware. A renowned expert in permafrost science, Dr. Nelson has conducted field research in Alaska, Canada, Siberia, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, the Tibetan Plateau and other places. He served on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which was awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, and is currently a vice president at the American Geographical Society.

The Michigan Academy is a nonprofit organization founded in 1894 to "promote research and diffuse knowledge." Thirty-nine colleges and universities support the academy's mission through institutional membership dues. Additional support comes from individual membership dues, donations and subscriptions to the academy's peer-reviewed journal.
