Camp gives middle schoolers a dose of nursing experience

Middle school students can learn about the human body, explore careers in nursing, tour a hospital and practice wrapping sprained wrists at Oakland University's School of Nursing Camp RN summer program.

Camp RN is open to students in seventh through ninth grades and will take place this year from July 21-Aug. 1 on OU's campus.

Campers will learn about health care practices through classroom instruction, hands-on activities and two job-shadowing opportunities at local hospitals. Participants will gain experience in nursing forensics, pharmacology, clinical calculations, nutrition, health and wellness as well as obtain CPR and First Aid certification. They will also tour OU's campus, interact with current nurses in a hospital setting and utilize the new physical assessment laboratory to learn about the human body.

Students participate in several hands-on activities during the Camp RN program.

"For those students who have an interest in health care, Camp RN will provide a broader understanding of all the options for nurses," said Kristina Aaron, academic adviser in the School of Nursing. "Nursing is not just about bedside practices and this camp will expose future healthcare providers to a variety of options with an entertaining and hands-on approach."

Kerri Schuiling, dean of the School of Nursing adds, "We want to teach those students who are interested in nursing what areas to study while in middle and high school to ensure success in college."

Oakland's School of Nursing uses this program as a tool to get students excited about the wide variety of nursing career opportunities. Seats fill up quickly as CAMP RN only accepts 50 participants for the 2014 summer program.

Qualifications to attend the camp include a 3.0 GPA, letters of recommendation and a personal statement identifying the student's goals for the future.
