Fun, engaging activities set to kick off winter 2014 term

The Oakland University community will ring in the winter 2014 semester with another exciting edition of Winter Welcome Week.

More than 30 non-profit agencies will present long- and short-term volunteer opportunities during the Winter Volunteer Fair, which will take place from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9 in the Fireside Lounge and Main Hallway of the Oakland Center. According to Jean Ann Miller, director of the Center for Student Activities, the event will highlight ways students can give “time, skills and resources to the community and help those in need.”

Also among the festivities is the Light It Up/Be the DJ Party set for 8-11 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 10 in the Oakland Center Banquet Rooms. Before the party, students can hone their DJ skills during a special “DJ Master Class” from 6-8 p.m. in the same location. This fun-filled evening promises plenty of music, dancing, refreshments and giveaways.

In addition, golden grizzly faithful are also encouraged to turn out for the OU men’s and women’s basketball games vs. University of Detroit Mercy on Saturday, Jan. 11 at Calihan Hall in Detroit. For just $15, participants can enjoy exciting hoops action, motor coach transportation, along with dinner, giveaways and prizes. The women’s game is set for 2 p.m. and the men’s game will take place at 7 p.m. Sign up for the event at the CSA Service Window at 49 Oakland Center.

Students looking for ways to get involved on campus are encouraged to attend the Winter Involvement Fair, which has been rescheduled and will now take place from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 14, in the Oakland Center Fireside Lounge and the Main Hallway of the Oakland Center. Dozens of representatives from OU student organizations will be on hand to answer questions and provide information about many upcoming activities and events.
