The Oakland University community is mourning the loss of a 19-year-old sophomore from Clinton Township, who died following an auto collision in Harrison Township on Thursday, Dec. 12.
Maya Michelle Horton, a 2012 graduate of L’Anse Creuse High School, was pursuing a degree in psychology at Oakland. She was also a student employee with the Office of International Students and Scholars on campus.
“She was just a beautiful person both inside and outside. She was very loving, very caring and just a very genuine person,” said ISSO Assistant Director Petra Knoche.
“I know that she overcame a lot of obstacles in life and handled it all with a lot of grace. She was a very strong person.”
Horton had a variety of responsibilities in the ISSO, including administrative work, assisting international students with questions and requests, and helping to coordinate various events.
“She was a very hard worker and we loved having her in the office,” Knoche added. “She will be in our thoughts and prayers and everyone in the ISSO will truly miss her.”
A funeral ceremony for Maya was held on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at Andrews & Hardy Funeral Home in Detroit.
