Area high school students had a chance to learn about the accounting field and careers when Oakland University hosted an all-day High School Leadership Conference this fall.
“This event introduces high school students to the career opportunities in accounting, as well as the benefits of the education and preparation provided to students in Oakland University’s accounting program,” Professor of Accounting Gadis “Buck” Dillon says, who helped establish the High School Leadership Conference in 2002.
The annual event is sponsored by the School of Business Administration, the Department of Accounting and Finance and the OU Office of Undergraduate Admissions, in partnership with the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants (MACPA).
The 227 high school students and teachers who attended the November 2013 conference in the Oakland Center heard the perspectives of accounting students, faculty and professionals.
Student panelists Rebecca Braga, ACC ’13 and current OU MAcc student, and accounting majors Jasmine Moseley and David Spatafora offered suggestions on how to be successful in college and prepare for accounting careers
High School students also heard from Special Accounting Instructor Donna Free, who covered the requirements for the CPA designation and explained how OU’s accounting program prepares its students.
