Weekend of Champions events take over campus Oct. 4-5

By Eric Reikowski, media relations assistant

The Oakland University community is gearing up for the 2013 Weekend of Champions (WOCOU), which will take place in tandem with the first-ever OU Family Day. The two-day extravaganza – set for Friday, Oct. 4, through Saturday, Oct. 5, – will bring an array of spirit-filled festivities to Oakland’s campus.

The OUSC Tailgate Party and Matilda Wilson’s 130th Birthday Bash will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4 in the P-17 Parking Lot. The community will celebrate the OU founder’s birthday with live music from the campus radio station, 88.3 WXOU, along with free food, cake and ice cream and giveaways.

The action will continue with “Friday Night Live,” featuring comedian, impressionist and singer Melissa Villasenor, from 7-8 p.m. in the Vandenberg Hall Dining Center. The 25-year-old from Los Angeles has appeared on “FrankTV” on TBS, “Family Guy,” “Adventure Time” on Cartoon Network and NBC’s “America’s Got Talent.”

Finally, “The Madnezz” will descend at the OU swimming and diving teams’ annual Black & Gold Meet from 9-10:30 p.m. in Oakland’s Aquatic Center. Other campus sports events include:

  • Women’s volleyball vs. Youngstown State University (Oct. 4 at 5 p.m. in the O’rena)
  • Women’s softball Black and Gold Game (Oct. 5 at 11 a.m. at the OU softball field)
  • Women’s softball Alumni Game (Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. at the OU softball field)
  • Women’s volleyball vs. Cleveland State University (Oct. 5 at 4 p.m. in the O’rena)
  • Men’s soccer vs. University of Detroit Mercy (Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. at the OU soccer field)

“This is a very exciting weekend of events for OU,” said Jean Ann Miller, director of the Center for Student Activities. “Not only do we have our annual Weekend of Champions to cheer on our sports teams, but we also have our very first Family Day, which is a great opportunity for parents and siblings to come and see what the campus is all about.”

Set for Saturday, Oct. 5, OU Family Day will be headlined by a free concert from singer/songwriter Tony Lucca at 1:30 p.m. in the Oakland Center Pioneer Food Court. A meet-and-greet will take place after the performance.

Known for his 2012 appearance on the NBC singing show, “The Voice,” Lucca first gained fame in the early 1990s as a cast member of Disney’s “The Mickey Mouse Club,” where he performed with future celebrity pop artists, including Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears. After a brief acting stint, the Michigan native moved on to a full-time music career that has spawned eight studio albums.

Later that night, Lucca will serve as a special guest judge on “OU’s Got Talent,” scheduled for 7-10 p.m. in the Oakland Center Banquet Rooms. Sponsored by the Student Program Board, the variety show will spotlight a mix of entertaining acts from OU students.
