New Student Convocation to welcome incoming OU class

By Katie Williams, contributing writer

Once again, Oakland University will welcome incoming students with the annual New Student Convocation, set for 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 3, in the O’rena.

The ceremony marks the beginning of a student’s college career and serves as an official welcome to OU. New students and transfer students are invited to attend.

This year’s ceremony will feature an updated and engaging format. In addition to the traditional formal procession of faculty in academic regalia, the event will also include videos highlighting student involvement and academic opportunities.

Convocation will also feature motivational speeches from prominent members of the campus community. Graeme Harper, dean of The Honors College, will deliver the keynote address.

Motivational speeches will also be given by Samantha Wolf, former OUSC president and student liaison to the board of trustees, James Lentini, senior vice president of academic affairs and provost, and Glenn McIntosh, interim vice president for student affairs. Jibran Ahmed, OU Student Congress vice president, will emcee the event.

Prior to the ceremony, incoming students will also participate in New Student Orientation Part II, which is required for all first-year students, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

As part of orientation, new students will attend an academic open house where they will be grouped according to their selected academic majors to meet faculty and students within their respective programs.

Orientation also includes an involvement fair, to be held after convocation from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the north side of the Oakland Center, featuring various student organizations from across campus.
