Scholarships send OU students on study abroad trips
A total of 21 Oakland University students will take their studies overseas during the summer and fall 2013 semesters, thanks to $12,500 in university scholarships designated to support study abroad programs.
Following a dramatic increase in study abroad applications, the Oakland University Alumni Association (OUAA) tripled the scholarship money available from 2012-13 to $6,000 to enable more students to study and travel in a foreign country.
Nine students each received either a $500 or $1,000 Alumni Study Abroad Scholarship award from the Oakland University Alumni Association (OUAA). The OUAA encourages students to take advantage of the opportunity to enhance their understanding of the global economy and world cultures.
The nine OUAA scholarship recipients and their study abroad locations are:

Amy Bush, Japan
Cheyanne Coss, Italy
Stephanie Saez-Jovane, France
Constantine Novotny, Italy
Gina Smothers, Greece
Kimberly Umlauf, Amsterdam
An additional 13 OU students each received a $500 award from the Oakland University Sharp Scholarship program for study abroad. The James A. Sharp and Tessie Baltrip Sharp Scholarship Award program recognizes the tremendous academic and career benefits of learning about other cultures.

Daniel Brengel also received the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship totaling $2,500. The Gilman Scholarship Program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, and is designed to foster global understanding by promoting friendly, sympathetic, and peaceful relations.
OUAA Study Abroad and Sharp award applications are accepted twice per year. Forms and details are available online.
Students can earn credits toward their Oakland degree through more than 180 study abroad programs in 47 countries as well as 165 colleges and universities in North America, Central America, the Caribbean, and Hawaii.
