As the start of the fall semester nears, all new, transfer, and graduate students are invited to accelerate their Oakland University campus involvement by attending one of several Jump Start programs.
“These programs were created to make sure that all of our students know the campus resources and benefits available to them,” said Jean Ann Miller, director of the Center for Student Activities and Leadership Development.
“These resources will help students be successful in the classroom, as well as expose them to what is offered and how to get involved in campus activities such as student organizations, club sports, intramurals, movies, comedy shows, lectures, varsity athletic events, and so much more. It allows students to see the social and cultural side of OU.”
All of the programs are free, and each is tailored to meet the needs of the specific student group. Commuter and residential students are welcome to attend. A meal and snacks will also be provided at each event.
Registration is open online. Students are encouraged to register as soon as possible.
The events are scheduled as follows:
- Veteran Student Jump Start
- First Year Student Jump Start
– 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31, in the Oakland Center Banquet Rooms.

-- Participants are eligible for a $500 scholarship offered to one student through the generosity of alumna Joyce Weiss.

In addition to introducing leadership and involvement opportunities, these programs are designed connect students with peer mentors and faculty, and ultimately, the university.
“Jump Starts offer networking opportunities, so once classes begin, students will already be connected to friendly and familiar faces on campus. These interactive and informative programs provide students with a true sense of belonging at OU,” Miller said. “When the university welcomes and embraces its students, this empowers them to be successful academically and reinforces the fact they made the right choice to attend Oakland University."
