AAMC/grr Update

Colleagues,

As we continue to educate lawmakers and the public about the negative impact of the sequester, it remains essential to communicate positive news about research advances happening at medical schools and teaching hospitals to demonstrate the return on investment that comes from NIH funding.

To that end, the AAMC Communications team has developed a new social media tool, as part of our Research Means Hope campaign, which will serve as a centralized and searchable repository of major medical research advances from AAMC-member institutions. This new tool will be an important part of our advocacy efforts to show legislators, the media, and the public how research conducted at AAMC-member institutions is advancing health and medicine, as well as how NIH-funded research benefits the patients we serve and our communities.

Now in its pilot stage, this new Research Means Hope Tumblr page will be officially launched after July 4.  To make this as robust a tool as possible when we launch, we are asking AAMC members to share their stories of research breakthroughs and submit content about their institution’s research efforts directly on the Tumblr page (http://medresearch.tumblr.com/). Content may include videos, photos, audio, and text such as press releases.

We encourage you to send in as many submissions about research breakthroughs and discoveries as possible by June 30 so there is a wealth of content on the page before our initial public roll-out in mid-July.  We also hope that your institution will submit content on an ongoing basis as new research discoveries are announced throughout the year.

To submit this content, we encourage you to work with your communications, government relations, and research teams. A copy of this email is also being sent to your representatives in the AAMC Group on Institutional Advancement, Government Relations Representatives, Advisory Panel on Research, and the Group on Research Advancement and Development.

What kinds of stories are we looking for?

How do institutions submit content?

1.      Visit http://medresearch.tumblr.com/ and click the “Share Your Story” tab at the upper right-hand side of the page. You will be automatically directed to the submission page.

2.      Click on the drop-down menu (under the introductory paragraph) to indicate what type of content you are posting (text, photo, video, link, etc).

3.      Insert your content into the text box.

4.      Check the boxes for the “tags” you'd like to see your content filed under.

5.      Click to accept the terms of submission.

6.      Press submit!

Thank you for helping educate lawmakers and others about the importance of the medical research you are doing at your institution and the difference you are making for patients in your community.

If you have any questions or experience technical difficulties, please contact Sadea Ramsay (sramsay@aamc.org) or Stephanie Schmitt (sschmitt@aamc.org).

Many thanks!

John
