Making a decision about what college to attend, navigating the application process, financial aid, and choosing a major can be difficult, and sometimes confusing, for high school students and their families. Accomplishing all that and still not knowing where your career interests lay can be overwhelming and can result in students spending extra money and years in college. Career exploration helps students create realistic educational and career plans.
High school students from Macomb and surrounding counties can learn more about potential career paths and preparing for college at Oakland University’s Career Exploration and College Readiness camps.
Led by Oakland University faculty and expert presenters, students will engage in lively discussions, hands-on activities and field trips to learn about various career fields, the knowledge, skills and abilities required, and the preparation needed to enter those fields. All camps are held at the Oakland University Anton/Frankel Center in Mount Clemens.
This summer, five different camps are offered:

July 29-31, 2013 8am-4pm Nursing & Health Sciences Camp
August 5-9, 2013 8am-3pm Engineering & Computer Science Camp
August 12-14, 2013 8am-3pm College Readiness Boot Camp
The Career Exploration Camp will introduce students to a variety of career fields including engineering and computer science; criminal justice and social work; business; nursing and health sciences; political science; psychology; education and sociology. Students will participate in activities like building their own light bulb and solar panels to learn about the field of engineering; touring the Macomb County court house and jail to learn about careers in criminal justice; learn about careers in business while working in groups to develop business and marketing strategies in a business simulation project. Students will also spend an entire day at Beaumont Hospital in Grosse Pointe to learn about careers in nursing, lab science, pharmacy, respiratory therapy and much more.
At the Business, Beyond the Basics Camp, students will learn what it takes to launch and run their own business. Through a group project, students will create their own company and unique product while learning about important business skills like time management, planning and decision-making. The camp will wrap up with a visit to the Macomb-Oakland University Incubator where students will present their final project to panel of professionals.
Students will be transported from the OU Mount Clemens location to main campus in Rochester each day for the Nursing and Health Science Camp. This camp will introduce students to careers in nursing, lab sciences, exercise 
science, nutrition and applied health sciences. Students will engage in hands-on activities with simulation mannequins to learn heart, lung and bowel sounds, blood pressure, respiration and temperature monitoring. The growing fields of medical laboratory sciences, nuclear medicine and radiologic technology will be explored, as well as careers in exercise science, nutrition and wellness promotion and much more.
The five-day Engineering and Computer Science Camp will help students explore the high-demand careers in the fields of industrial, systems, mechanical and electrical engineering and computer science. Students will be introduced to the emerging fields of biomedical and alternative energy. A visit to Oakland University in Rochester will provide students an opportunity to learn about the various alternative energy projects on campus.
Students will learn about the various educational options available after high school, tips for navigating the college application process, tools to search for scholarships and writing scholarship essays, and techniques for improving study skills at the College Readiness Boot Camp. Hands-on activities include a computer-based interest inventory assessment and small group discussions on exploring college majors. A field trip is also planned for students to tour Oakland University’s campus in Rochester.
