Prospective students invited to learn about OU's Executive MBA program

Oakland University's School of Business will host an information session for prospective Executive MBA (EMBA) students at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, in 238 Elliott Hall on the campus of Oakland University.

The event will provide an ideal format to learn more about the program directly from faculty coordinators, who can answer questions about the application process, program structure and more.

Students admitted to the EMBA program can specialize in Health Care Management or Information Systems Leadership. Prospective students are encouraged to apply early, as enrollment is limited to 30 students. For more information, those interested can visit the EMBA Web site at emba.oakland.edu.

“Physician leaders need additional skills they may not have received in a medical school setting,” says Dr. Christopher Milback, who completed OU’s EMBA program in 2011. “I saw a need to be aware of what goes into the decisions made in health care and to have a better understanding of the business world.”

When he began researching Executive MBA programs, Oakland University’s program stood out from the beginning. “Oakland University has an excellent reputation,” he says. He also liked the idea of small cohorts, the scheduling flexibility and the involvement of local business experts in cooperation with university faculty.

“The collaborative nature of the program made me most enthusiastic about it,” says Milback, chief of the Department of Family Medicine at William Beaumont Hospital, Troy.

His cohort consisted of physicians, IT professionals, pharmacists and small business owners. “It was an opportunity to share diverse knowledge,” Milback says. “Other programs don’t have that flavor to them. You need those personal interactions.”

He was further impressed with the caliber of the program faculty and the business representatives he interacted with from week to week.

“We’ve got really great academic experts at OU combining their knowledge with real-world experts from the business world,” Milback says. “That really is one of the program’s strengths. Bringing that into a small group setting enriches collaboration and discussion. It’s really a well-kept secret.”
