Oakland University students Mathew Solt and Alexandra Zetye recently received honorable mention in the 2013 Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program. Mathew and Alexandra are the first OU students recognized by the Goldwater Foundation.
The Barry Goldwater Scholarship program is the most prestigious national undergraduate award recognizing students majoring in mathematics, science and engineering. The scholarship was established to encourage distinguished scholars to advance and excel in science and mathematics.
“Even with receiving honorable mention, our two students are seen as a scientists on the rise,” said Brad Roth, physics professor and OU faculty representative for the award. “They are competing against the very best in the country.”
Each year, nearly 1,000 sophomore and junior majors in mathematics, science or engineering are nominated nationwide for the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program. Approximately 300 students are awarded the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and roughly 150 students receive honorable mention.
Each university is allowed four nominations. The 2013 Oakland University nominees were:
Mathew Solt. Mathew is a junior physics and mechanical engineering major. In fall 2012 his research on a neutron detector was presented at an American Physical Society meeting.
Kristine Nixon. Kristine is a junior premed and biology major. She is also a member of the OU Honors College.
Marvin Yousif. Marvin is a junior biology major. In fall 2012 his review on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) was published in Frontiers Biology.
Alexandra Zetye. Alexandra is a sophomore majoring in engineering biology, mathematics, piano performance and French. In November 2012 she submitted a paper for publication on Chagas disease.
Professor Roth works in conjunction with The Honors College overseeing the Goldwater Scholarship.
“What set these students off is their high GPA and academic record plus their research experience,” Roth said. “We are always encouraging students who are early in their career, who have begun doing their research, and who have a strong GPA to apply for this award.”
