Two of Oakland University's most dedicated employees have been honored for outstanding service. Kimberly McWain and David Ollie Ray are the recipients of the 2013 Sharon L. Wilhelm Excellence Award.

“This award honors the memory of one of Oakland University’s most dedicated and caring employees, Sharon Wilhelm, whose long service to the institution is a beacon for others,” said Dr. Susan Awbrey, interim provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs. “Kimberly McWain and David Ollie Ray are exemplars of the dedication and service for which it stands.”

In her ten years as an office assistant in the OU Police Department, McWain has provided a calm and steady presence in all situations. She is often the first point of contact for station visitors and is quick to offer compassion and patience for those seeking police assistance. She brings a high degree of integrity and trustworthiness to her job, which involves handling confidential information on a daily basis.

In keeping with the Wilhelm Award’s standards, McWain has routinely gone beyond the call of duty in looking for ways to deliver superior service. A few years ago, she took the lead in applying for and administering a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant to help recoup extra costs incurred by the OUPD and Facilities Management during a major power outage that affected the university.

Ray, an office assistant in the Department of Orientation and New Student Programs, brings a similar passion to his job. He has been praised for strong customer service skills, and he shares his knowledge and enthusiasm with students, parents and colleagues.

Not only can he answer questions about orientation policies and procedures, but his coworkers describe him as a historian to the entire Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. Ray’s approachable manner and good-natured personality have made him popular among students who often come to him with problems or simply to hear a funny story.

McWain and Ray were recognized at a special reception this spring.
