The annual Greek Week competitions will begin Monday, April 1, with four teams comprised of 14 sororities and fraternities vying for the first place prize. This year’s theme is “Survivor.”
Teams will compete in four events throughout the week to earn points. The team that collects the most points by the end of the week will be given the title of Greek Week winner and will receive an engraved plaque hung in the Center for Student Activities. All events are open to the public.
“Greek Week is one of the events where Oakland's Greek unity can be felt the strongest,” said Greek Council President Rachel Redmond. “It's a great way for Greeks to meet and work with other Greeks they may not have otherwise met.”
The games begin with a dance off from 6-11 p.m. on Monday, April 1, in the Oakland Center Banquet Rooms. Greek teams will have the opportunity to perform choreography for a song of their choice to be judged by selected student leaders and faculty.
On Tuesday, April 2, guest speaker Ralph M. Engle, J.D. from Engle and Associates Law will present a lecture to students on knowing their rights, alcohol awareness and driving under the influence. The lecture will be held from 6-7 p.m. in the Oakland Center Gold Rooms.
All Greeks are encouraged to represent their organization for "Wear Your Letters" day on Wednesday, April 3. The Faculty and Staff Appreciation Breakfast will be held on this day from 8:30-10:30 a.m. in the Center for Student Activities.
“I’m most excited for "Wear Your Letters" day,” said Redmond. “I think there are a lot of negative stereotypes surrounding Greek life and also an underrepresentation on campus. We want to show people that Greek life is more about sisterhood and brotherhood, becoming a stronger leader and getting involved. We also want to connect with our Greek alumni and faculty.”
The four Greek teams will participate in a cook-off from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, April 4, at Greek Row, located on Adams Road. Each team will present their Survivor-themed meal to the judges for scoring.
Colleges Against Cancer at OU will host the Relay for Life beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 5. The relay will start at Bear Lake and teams will walk the campus until 3 a.m. Greek teams will compete to raise money for the American Cancer Society. The final competition of the week, the Greek Olympics, will take place from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, in the upper fields. Teams will participate in a variety of field games for their last chance to earn points.
“The Greek Olympics evolved from events we did in the past, such as the tug of war and dodge ball tournament,” said Redmond. “This year, we combined those smaller events into one games day and added more games to it.”
Awards will be presented at the 2013 Student Activities and Leadership Award Night at 5 p.m. on Monday, April 8, in the Oakland Center Banquet Rooms. The CSA will recognize outstanding student and Greek organizations, student leaders, advisers, and graduating seniors. Awards to be presented include Student Organization of the Year, President of the Year, and Greek Week Winners.
