OU student earns competitive scholarship from national organization

Oakland University student Jeanette Dye is already making strides in her field, having earned the competitive 2013 John Coné Scholarship from the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD), the world’s largest association dedicated to the training and development field.

The John Coné Scholarship was established by one of ASTD’s most respected members and champions to nurture the professional development of students seeking to enter the human resource training and development field.

“I was thrilled to learn I had won,” Dye said. “Being a member of ASTD will allow me to access the society's job bank and educational resources in addition to enabling me to network with working professionals in the training field.”

After graduation, Dye plans to work as an instructional designer.

“Jeannette is a very professional, forward-thinking student who has synthesized her solid skills and experience with meaningful coursework toward her future plans and goals,” said Julie Borkin, Ph.D., acting director of OU’s Integrative Studies program. “She is very disciplined and engaged with OU and all it has to offer. Her commitment to excellence is evident in all she does.”

ASTD awards six one-year membership scholarships and one scholarship for a student to attend the society’s annual conference, the premier event in the training industry. The scholarships provide winners access to research, content, and resources relevant to the training and development profession.

“It is exciting that a training and development student here at OU was one of just six students across the country to win this scholarship,” Dr. Borkin continued. “It is a great affirmation to her goals and a great testament to the wonderful training and development faculty and staff here at OU in the School of Education and Human Services.”

ASTD is the world’s largest professional association dedicated to the training and development field. In more than 100 countries, ASTD’s members work in organizations of all sizes, in the private and public sectors, as independent consultants, and as suppliers.
