OU's music program to perform at Orchestra Hall

The students, faculty and guest performers of OU’s music program provide the university and the wider community with a dazzling array of recitals throughout the year, covering many aspects of performance, from opera though chamber music, from Native American percussion to traditional brass band. It’s hard to predict when the moments of real magic will happen, in part because those moments may be experienced differently by each individual audience member.

But this April we believe we can offer a pretty safe bet for an unforgettable musical experience, because part of the magic at this event will be location, location, location. Get your tickets early to hear our very own Oakland Symphony Orchestra (OSO) and Oakland University Symphony Chorus as they take their show on the road for their annual performance at Detroit’s Orchestra Hall, the home of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.  The concert is on Wednesday, April 10 at 8 p.m.

Associate Professor Michael Mitchell, music program director and conductor of Symphony Chorus said, “I think it is wonderful that we go every year to Orchestra Hall to perform the final concert of the Oakland Symphony season with the Symphony Chorus. It's one of America's great concert halls. Performing great music in a great concert hall is one of the most memorable experiences we can give our students.”

David Mety, who last year played in the percussion section of the OSO, said, “I remember being there for a performance at Orchestra Hall when they performed Verdi's Requiem, and it was great to hear our orchestra and chorus in such a beautiful hall. Now, I get to return there as the second timpanist in the orchestra, and I will have the privilege to perform, playing some of the most intense and beautiful orchestra music out there!” David hopes to play percussion again this year.

The April 10 Orchestra Hall concert will feature Lord Nelson Mass by Franz Joseph Haydn and Symphony No. 5 in B flat major, op 100 by Sergei Prokofiev.  Tickets are $20 for general admission and $10 for students.  Tickets can be purchased in advance with no service fees at startickets.com or by phone at (800) 585-3737. They can also be purchased at the Center for Student Activities Service Window in the Oakland Center or at the Varner Hall Box Office.
