Harvard scholar to discuss ongoing global economic crisis March 7

By Eric Reikowski, media relations assistant

The ongoing global financial crisis will be the focus of Oakland University’s 2013 Meadow Brook Lecture in International Affairs.

Set for 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 7, at Meadow Brook Hall, the lecture will feature Jeffry Frieden, Ph.D., professor of government at Harvard University, and a leading expert on global economic issues.

“Dr. Freiden has spoken and written extensively on the debt crisis and what it means for the global economy,” said Peter Trumbore, Ph.D., associate professor of political science. “Given some of the political battles happening right now, we thought he would be a good person to bring to campus.”

Dr. Frieden’s talk, “Lost Decades? Global Debt Crises and the Long Recovery” will explore the mounting debt issues facing the United States and Europe and offer insights on solving those challenges. The annual lecture, now in its second year, provides a forum for discussion and contributes to the unique experiences available to OU students, according to Dr. Trumbore.

“Bringing world-renowned scholars to campus gives our students a chance to interact with someone they wouldn’t normally see,” he explained. “We try to bring in high-profile people who are accessible to a general audience. It also gives us an opportunity to showcase Meadow Brook Hall as part of the intellectual life of the community.”

A respected voice in international policy circles, Dr. Frieden is the Stanfield Professor of International Peace at Harvard University and specializes in the politics of international monetary and financial relations. He is coauthor of "Lost Decades: The Making of America’s Debt Crisis and the Long Recovery," (2011) and also published "Global Capitalism: Its Rise and Fall in the Twentieth Century" (2006) In addition, Dr. Frieden’s work includes dozens of book chapters and journal articles on related topics and his commentary has appeared in magazines and newspapers around the world.

Dr. Frieden will also attend a small “Meet-and-Greet” with students and faculty from the departments of Political Science and Economics from 9-10 a.m. on Friday, March 8, in the Stinson Student Advancement Center of the School of Business Administration.

The Meadow Brook Lecture is sponsored by the Department of Political Science with support from the Economics Student Association.
