Oakland University’s singing group Gold Vibrations A Cappella is hitting all the right notes.
Earlier this month, the group came in fourth place at an International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) competition. The quarterfinal event took place at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and featured nine collegiate vocal ensembles from around the state.
This was OU’s second appearance in the competition, according to Elyse Foster, president of Gold Vibrations. All teams must pass through a rigorous application process to be invited to perform.
“Each group must send a video of their group singing three songs in order to be considered for the competition,” Foster explained. “Once Varsity Vocals—the group that puts on ICCA – makes their choices, they announce the groups that have been selected to compete, as well as where they're competing and who they'll compete against.”
Foster, who founded the group in 2009 with three high school friends, said that members come from different fields, from music to medicine.
In competition, the group –a balanced mix of men and women – performed several songs, including “Mr. Blue Sky” by Electric Light Orchestra, "Hide and Seek" by Imogen Heap, and “Man in the Mirrior” by Michael Jackson.
Next up, Gold Vibrations will perform at the Phi Sigma Sigma “Mr. Phi Significant” event on Friday, March 8, in OU’s Dodge Hall. A spring concert has also been tentatively scheduled for April.
