MICHIGAN'S RIGHT-TO-WORK LAWS:
A New Frontier?

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2013
Noon until 1 p.m.

Macomb-OU INCubator
at Velocity Collaboration Center
6633 Eighteen Mile Road, Sterling Heights, Mich. 48314

In this Lunch and Launch, John Hancock, shareholder with the law firm of Butzel Long, will conduct a presentation regarding the "right-to-work" laws enacted on December 11, 2012, in Michigan for both private and public sector employees. The laws make it unlawful to require an employee to become a union member, or to pay union dues or fees, as a condition of employment.

This briefing will review these new laws and how they may impact unions and collective bargaining strategies, including potential union requests to extend current contracts before the law becomes effective. Issues regarding how to administer dues check-offs and potential legal challenges to these new laws will also be discussed. In addition, John will address how the new "right-to-work" legal environment may affect non-unionized employers and their tactics for staying union-free.

John's practice focuses on collective bargaining negotiations and arbitrations as well as counseling of both public and private employers. He has also done extensive employment litigation and OSHA litigation. John has served as chief negotiator in numerous collective bargaining negotiations for public schools, municipal and public utilities as well as clients in various other businesses ranging from casinos to steel plants to hospitals and country clubs. A good portion of his practice is devoted to counseling clients on employment issues. He is a graduate of Duke University Law School and the University of Notre Dame.
