Oakland University doctoral student, Xu Chen, has been awarded the Best Poster Award of $500 by the North American Deep Drawing Research Group (NADDRG) for the work on his poster.
“The topic of my poster is to provide an alternative method to evaluate the 'forming limit' of sheet metals. Dr. Stu Keeler invented the 'forming limit' and Europe built an ISO standard to evaluate the forming limit. The researchers in the U. S found that the current European standard failed to work on some cases. So our lab and many other researchers are making effort on developing an alternative method,” Chen said.
Chen, a research assistant in the optical lab at OU, credits his interest in sheet metal to his father, who is an automobile engineer.
The 29-year-old student came to the U.S. from China in 2009, where he attended OU to receive his masters in mechanical engineering. Upon completing his degree in 2011, Chen then began studying for his Ph. D.
Chen appreciates the interest shown by many people, in regard to the topic of his poster.
”I feel grateful to all who helped and guided me in my research,” Chen said.
After graduating with his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, Chen hopes to work in the field exploring non-contact high temperature measurement, as seen in the shells of space shuttles.
