One important mission at Oakland University is to foster leadership development for students that can be applied to careers after graduation. Oakland offers a number of student staff opportunities that not only help students pay for their education, but also get them involved and teach foundations for career experience.
This semester, the Center for Multicultural Initiatives (CMI), along with Orientation and New Student Programs (ONSP), are looking for interested and enthusiastic students to fill positions as Peer Mentors and Orientation Group Leaders for the upcoming year.
CMI Peer Mentors are expected to be role models of academic and social success to their mentees and to the campus community. Applicants for this position must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and be in sophomore standing by the Fall 2013 semester. Peer Mentors work an average of 10 hours per week during the fall and winter semesters.
“I like encouraging others to become student leaders,” said Blake Bonkowski, first-time peer mentor. “It’s a great way to connect and meet new people through this unique multicultural experience. And then you can use that experience to guide others.”
Orientation Group Leaders guide groups of incoming students through the orientation experience. OGLs assist with student advising and registration, facilitate small group discussions, and create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for new students. This position requires a minimum 2.75 GPA and sophomore standing by the Fall 2013 semester. OGL training begins and late April and continues through the first week of fall classes.
Sophomore Rachel Brown became an OGL after a coworker suggested the position to her. “This position really breaks you out of your comfort zone and pushes you to learn more about yourself throughout the entire experience,” said Brown. “It was the best summer I’ve ever had. The friendships, memories and skills that I developed over the summer are almost life changing.”
The three step application process begins with a short information session, during which applicants are free to ask questions, meet former or current staff and learn about the positions. The final information session will be held from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 23, in the Oakland Room of the Oakland Center. Those interested in applying can contact CMI at (248) 370-4404 or ONSP at (248) 370-4653.
Students must submit an application with a resume and cover letter by 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 28. Applications can be completed online at oakland.edu/apps/slrapp. Applicants selected to move forward will attend the group process, and then CMI and ONSP will continue with interviews and final selection separately.
Enthusiastic students should apply now to fill positions as Peer Mentors and Orientation Group Leaders for the upcoming year.
