Oakland to embrace community with MLK Day of Service
On Saturday, Jan. 19, Oakland University will observe the annual MLK National Day of Service with a series of projects to support the surrounding community.
Registration starts at 9:30 a.m. in the Oakland Center Fireside Lounge, where volunteers can pick up a free lunch before heading to their sites.
“Giving back to the community is a part of the whole academic experience,” said Brad Bender, in Oakland University’s Office of Academic and Service Learning. “Contributing to service projects not only helps others in need, but also helps us learn and grow at the same time.”
Those who sign up will receive an email on Thursday, Jan. 17, confirming registration and providing details on project assignments.
Volunteers will be assisting with five community projects at the following locations:
Baldwin Center in Pontiac (10 a.m. – 1 p.m.)
-Painting bookshelves, organizing storage space
Beyond Basics in Troy (10 a.m. – 1 p.m.)
-Assembling book cover kits, organizing books
Habitat for Humanity in Pontiac (10 a.m. – 1 p.m.)
-Assisting at the ReStore resale shop
Michigan School for the Arts in Pontiac (10 a.m. – 1 p.m.)
-Preparing for MSA grand opening
Older Persons’ Commission in Rochester (11:15 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.)
-Assisting with the OPC Third Annual Indoor Triathlon
