By all accounts, 2012 was a year of tremendous growth for Oakland University. With new buildings, new programs, and an expanding student body, the university has established itself as a dynamic and forward-thinking institution. The profound successes of the year are made possible through the support of remarkably dedicated faculty, staff, students and a vibrant local community.
For the 15th consecutive year, enrollment to the university community grew, making Oakland home to 19,7400 students. This numbers includes 75 new students to the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, now in its second year of providing distinctive medical instruction to the physicians of tomorrow.
Oakland’s distinctive academic offerings increased to include a bachelor of arts degree in graphic design, a bachelor a master of science degree and a doctoral degree in psychology, and a bachelor of criminal justice degree. In addition to new degree programs, OU faculty and staff are expanding academic concentrations within popular, existing programs such as a court administration concentration in the Master of Public Administration program, and a nutrition and health specialization in the Wellness, Health Promotion and Injury Prevention program.
Oakland’s campus grew dramatically in 2012, with the opening of two new buildings and plans to move forward with two other capital projects. The Steve Sharf Clubhouse opened in June, and the172,000-square-foot Human Health Building opened in August. Housing the School of Nursing and the School of Health Sciences, the HHB boasts an energy-efficient and sustainable design that makes it the first higher education building in Michigan to be certified LEED Platinum.
Additionally, 2012 saw the groundbreaking of a $74.6 million engineering center, and the announcement of plans for a $30 million student housing facility that will provide an additional 550 beds on campus. Both projects are slated for completion in 2014.
