SBA Scholars give blankets, bears and more to children’s hospital

Spending the holiday season in the hospital is not any child’s idea of a good time. That’s why the students in Oakland University’s School of Business Administration’s Scholars program donated 30 hand-tied fleece blankets, 30 Teddy bears and a check for $375 to C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor this holiday season.

“We thought it would be meaningful to do something personal and brighten the children’s Christmas,” says Rebecca Braga, an accounting major who spearheaded the “Happiness Is a Warm Blanket” project.

SBA’s Scholars planned the project in October, and in November the group raised $925 to make it a reality.

The blankets they assembled didn’t require sewing. They’re made of two pieces of fringed fabric that are knotted together. “I made these blankets before and knew they were perfect for this project,” Braga adds.

“It has been really great. When I bought the fabric and told people at the store what we’re doing, they were really excited. The people at the hospital were thrilled about the donation.”

The Scholars delivered their gifts to C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital the week before Christmas.

“It means a lot to us, the hospital and the children,” Braga says. “A lot of us are very fortunate. We’ve been blessed with school and academic ability, and it feels good to give back.”

The School of Business Administration’s Scholars program provides a select group of high academic achieving students an opportunity to participate in leadership, development and mentoring activities.

Scholars is a competitive program, and students are invited to participate based on a 3.4 minimum GPA. For more information about Scholars, visit the Scholars web page.
