Take 5 with Linda Harding

By Katie Land, news editor

Composed of a diverse array of faculty, staff and administrators, the Oakland University community is unique, creative, and dedicated. As part of a continuing effort to explore the various roles and lives of our Golden Grizzlies, the News @ OU website presents a new interview series. We invite you to share these stories and “Take 5” with OU.

“Take 5 with Linda Harding”

Linda Harding is an administrative assistant in the Division of Student Affairs, a role she has held for more than ten years at Oakland University. Working with Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Mary Beth Snyder, Linda encounters a broad range of duties, from managing calendars, office budgets, meetings and events to assisting students as they seek guidance in their academic careers. On campus, Linda is a member of the Women of OU Critical Difference Scholarship Committee. The Michigan native has two grown children and lives in Bloomfield with her husband Brad.

1) What special responsibilities or challenges do you encounter in your role?

Every day, many students come to our office looking for help and direction. It can be a challenge to help students find the right path. Whether they are struggling with financial aid, choosing a major, or dealing with emotional stress, we steer students to the many resources on campus. We have to be prepared all the time, and ready to handle anything that may be thrown at us. Each day is different, and we stay busy throughout the year.

2) What is your favorite vacation spot?

Manistee, Michigan. My husband and I started building a cabin 11 years ago. We had a crew rough it in and we took it from there. From design to finishing touches we did it all. Every Friday after work we would make the 4 hour trip up, work all weekend and come home exhausted on Sunday evening. We go up year around and enjoy summer sunsets and winter snowshoeing on the many trails Upper Michigan has to offer. We hope to eventually retire in Manistee and travel around the country.

3) Do you have any particular hobbies?

I have too many hobbies, and never enough time. I am a knitter, quilter, baker, gardener, beader and reader. I’ve won blue ribbons and “best in show” for some of my quilts. I make most of my jewelry and am now working on a quilted purse and a thread painting project.

4) What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is when a student comes back to our office to say “thank you,” and to share how we’ve helped in their success. It is a great feeling to know that you’ve made a difference in a student’s life.

5) Any special holiday traditions?

Cookie Baking Day is our special tradition. For the past 31 years my kids and I spend a day baking and decorating dozens of cookies to give to family and friends. My kids are grown now but still come home to enjoy this tradition.
