OU expands study abroad options through CIEE consortium

Oakland University has increased the number of study-abroad offerings to more than 295 programs in 45 countries through its membership in the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) study-abroad consortium.

“CIEE offers programs in eastern Europe, Africa, Asia, South America and other locations we didn’t have before,” said Brian Connery, director of International Education/Study Abroad at Oakland. “CIEE also offers programs in disciplines we did not offer previously in social sciences, business, public health, service-learning, and environmental science and sustainability.”

CIEE is a non-profit, non-governmental international exchange organization that provides high-quality, academically rigorous study-abroad opportunities using the expertise of local professionals at all of its sites.

“CIEE also offers more opportunity for direct enrollment at local universities, which means students are able to take more courses in a greater variety of disciplines,” Connery continued. “CIEE membership reinforces Oakland University’s vision to provide students with broad cultural and social experiences.”

CIEE students can study abroad for a single term, full academic year, or a short 3 – 5 week summer program. Costs vary depending on the program’s location and duration. Students register for classes and pay tuition through Oakland University.

“Course work completed during the study abroad earns Oakland University credit and applies to the students’ degree programs,” said Connery. “Students’ scholarships and financial aid at OU can be applied to the cost of the program.”

Prospective students need to meet with a study-abroad adviser, create an online account, and meet with faculty advisers to determine proper fit into degree programs. CIEE applications are now accepted for summer 2013 study abroad. Application deadlines for 2013 vary depending on the program.
