Day of Service offers volunteer, donation opportunities for community

By Eric Reikowski, media relations assistant

Faculty, staff, students and alumni are encouraged to turn out for Oakland University’s first-ever “OU Day of Service,” which will take place from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14, in the Oakland Center Gold Rooms.

A number of service opportunities will be offered throughout the day to support various initiatives and nonprofit organizations. OU community members are welcome to stay for the entire day or drop in at their convenience.

“Everyone on campus can do something to make a difference,” said Jean Ann Miller, director of the Center for Student Activities. “With the holidays approaching, it’s a great time to reach out and help others in need. We’re hoping to make this event an annual tradition.”

For those interested in hands-on activities, Arts and Scraps, a Detroit-based non-profit agency, will provide recycled materials to be made into art supplies and sent to schools for use in student projects. OU’s Sustaining Our Planet Earth (S.O.P.E.) program will be creating holiday cards from recycled materials and the American Marketing Association (AMA) chapter will be making holiday ornaments for local nursing homes.

An array of charitable giving opportunities will also be available. The American Red Cross will accept donations to support relief efforts for those affected by Hurricane Sandy. Genisys Credit Union will hold a canned food drive with donations used to make holiday food baskets for the Baldwin Center and Lighthouse of Oakland County.

Recognizing Veterans Day, which falls on Sunday, Nov. 11, Oakland’s Veterans Support Services Office and Student Veterans of America chapter will collect donations to benefit the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots Foundation. The campaign seeks new unwrapped toys, which will be distributed to local children and families in need. Contributions are also needed to assemble care packages for troops overseas. Requested items include snacks, toiletries, entertainment and other materials listed on the program flyer. OU’s campus radio station 88.3 FM WXOU will be on site to liven the atmosphere with golden grizzly spirit.
