Campaign Roundup to discuss impact and results of 2012 election

By Katie Land, news editor

The polls have officially closed, and the nation has re-elected President Barack Obama for a second term. Oakland University will host a Campaign Roundup event to discuss these results, as well as the impact of the local and state elections.

The event will unite political practitioners, pollsters, campaign finance experts and journalists to sort through the impact of the results, and what it will all mean moving forward.

“It has always been our goal to bring students, faculty, staff, and members of the community together,” said Dave Dulio, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Political Science Department. “It is part of our mission. We spend so many months in campaign mode it’s important to take a step back after the campaign is over and examine what happened and why.”

The Campaign Roundup will feature five well-respected panelists including Chuck Stokes from WXYZ-TV, Christy McDonald from Detroit Public Television, Rich Robinson from the Michigan Campaign Finance Institute, Bernie Porn from the polling firm EPIC-MRA, and Terri Towner, assistant professor of political science.

“Sometimes the large, macro-level factors become hidden in the lead-up to election day in the midst of all the daily tracking polls and the 24-hour news cycle,” Dr. Dulio continued. “This event allows us to take a deep breath and discuss what happened and what it means for campaigns and governing going ahead.”

The major focus of the event and discussion will be the presidential election, however the state races and ballot proposals will be explored as well. Panel members will offer keen perspectives on how campaign decisions and circumstances influenced the outcomes of the election cycle, as well as how these outcomes will impact public policy and government in the coming years.

The Campaign Roundup event is set for 12:30-2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8, in the Oakland Center Gold Rooms. The event is free and open to the public. To register for the Campaign Roundup, click here.
