New award to recognize undergraduate achievement in research

To celebrate student achievement and excellence in library research, University Libraries have established the new Undergraduate Research in Writing award.

This annual prize will recognize up to two students who have most successfully applied Information literacy skills in a paper or project. The $500 first place and $250 second place scholarships will be applied directly to tuition.

"We hope that this award will bring visibility to the benefits of information literacy and inspire students to consider them,” said Adriene Lim, Ph.D., dean of University Libraries. “Knowing how to find, evaluate, and use information ethically is even more important for our students now, with information expanding exponentially every day."

The awards will recognize student papers that rely on research with sources from Oakland University’s Writing Intensive in the Major and Writing Intensive in General Education courses. The projects can cover any topic as long as they demonstrate a proficiency in research, information literacy, and the ethical use of information.

“Employer surveys consistently show that information skills are highly valued in the workplace,” said Dominique Daniel, Ph.D., assistant professor and Humanities Librarian for History and Modern Languages. “So the more students prepared for this in college, the better.”

Students may submit their work or be nominated by a faculty member by Friday, March 1. A panel of faculty members will select the winning projects.
